Helping Women with Breast Cancer Since 2001

UPDATE
Picture
The U'ilani Fund will be ceasing operations on December 31, 2020. We are forever grateful beyond words for the support we have received. As of November 30, we are no longer administering grants.

After 20 incredible years of funding complementary care treatments for people with breast cancer, The U’ilani Fund is closing our fund at the end of 2020.

While we are sad to have to make this decision, we are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished. During these last 20 years we have given almost 2,000 grants for over $670,000. These grants have helped our recipients not only have a better quality of life while going through treatment, they have also helped our recipients feel cared for and comforted during a very frightening and uncomfortable time in their lives. Your support of the U’ilani Fund has made all of this possible and we are grateful beyond words to you for helping us to give hope and relief to so many.

The work we have done supporting people with breast cancer continues with fantastic organizations like Shanti’s Margot Murphy Women’s Cancer Program in San Francisco, and the Mana’olana Pink Paddlers in Maui.  Please check out the incredible work they are doing and support them with your donations: https://www.shanti.org/programs-services/margot-murphy-womens-cancer-program/  and http://www.manaolanapinkpaddlersmaui.org/

We are also grateful that in doing this work we have been able to honor the life of our namesake, Marina U’ilani Bermudez, whose generous and kind spirit has guided us over the years. Those of you who knew U’ilani understand that she embodied the true meaning of aloha and we hope that we shared that aloha with you as you helped us care for breast cancer survivors through the years.

U'ilani's Story

The U'ilani Fund was created to honor the memory of Marina Lee U'ilani Bermudez, a family practice physician who passed away from breast cancer in July of 2000.  U'ilani was a fun-loving, active person whose untimely death at age 42 prompted her friends and family to honor all the good she had brought into our lives.

Who We Help

Andra Young, middle, an U'ilani Fund grant recipient, at her head shaving, with support from her husband and mother who also shaved their heads!

"I used the funds from my grant to get bodywork (therapeutic massage), which has aided in relieving intense joint pain I have been experiencing through chemo.  Thank you so much -- I'm so appreciative that an organization like the U'ilani Fund exists!"    --

Ohana Ride for Breast Cancer

Each year we have hosted The Ohana Ride for Breast Cancer, a 20-mile or 50-mile bicycle tour in and around Santa Cruz and Capitola.  The day has typically ended with a celebratory luau and Hawaiian entertainment at the Seymour Marine Discovery Center in Santa Cruz.  We did not have the Ohana Ride this year, due to Covid.
