U'ilani's Story

Picture
The U'ilani Fund was created to honor the memory of Marina Lee U'ilani Bermudez, a family practice physician who passed away from breast cancer in July of 2000.  U'ilnai was a fun-loving, active person whose untimely death at age 42 prompted her friends and family to find a way to honor all the good she brought into our lives.
During her chemotherapy and radiation, U'ilani also took advantage of alternative and complementary care strategies which helped her remain strong and positive throughout her treatment.   We witnessed the value of complementary treatments and recognized that many women may not be able to benefit from things like massage, acupuncture, chiropractic care, and herbs due to cost and lack of coverage by insurance.

The U'ilani Fund was created to offer women (and men) with breast cancer access to the same opportunities for comfort and support that U'Ilani had.

U'ilani was a fun-loving and caring person who loved backpacking, boogie boarding, woodworking and being with family and friends.   She brought her love of life and of others into her family practice, positively influencing the clinic where she worked at San Francisco State University.  U'ilani grew up in Hawaii and spent most of her adult life in San Francisco and Santa Cruz.
