Important Update from The U'ilani Fund Directors

September, 2020

Dear Friend of the U’ilani Fund:

We want to thank you for supporting The U’ilani Fund in our mission to help breast cancer patients have access to complementary care. After 20 successful years of doing this important work, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision to close the U’ilani Fund and our operations at the end of 2020. Like so many organizations, we have been hit hard by the difficulty of fundraising during these times, but we have also been aware that, even in good times, our ability to continue to keep up with the ever-increasing requests for grants and our commitment to serve all eligible applicants has been a great concern for us. At this time we will cease fundraising, but we will continue to honor our mission to give grants for complementary care to breast cancer patients for the remainder of the year and will then shut down operations at the end of 2020.

While we are sad to have to make this decision, we are incredibly proud of what we have accomplished. During these last 20 years we have given almost 2,000 grants for over $650,000 to help breast cancer patients have access to complementary care such as acupuncture, massage, cancer wellness retreats and naturopathic treatments. These complementary care grants have helped our recipients not only have a better quality of life while going through treatment, they have also helped our recipients feel cared for and comforted during a very frightening and uncomfortable time in their lives. Your support of the U’ilani Fund has made all of this possible and we are grateful beyond words to you for helping us to give hope and relief to so many.

We are also grateful that in doing this work we have been able to honor the life of our namesake, Marina U’ilani Bermudez, whose generous and kind spirit has guided us over the years. Those of you who knew U’ilani understand that she embodied the true meaning of aloha and we hope that we shared that aloha with you as you helped us care for breast cancer survivors through the years.

Please accept our heartfelt thank you for your support of the U’ilani Fund. We wish you a warm aloha for the coming years.

Sincerely,

Suzanne K. Nicholas, PhD

We also want you to know that one of our founding directors, Dr. Mindy Goldman, is in the earliest stages of imagining a new organization that will support breast cancer survivors in a different way than what the U’ilani Fund has done. As she develops these new ideas and vision she will be in touch to let you know about this new venture
